Bottom Dollar Food Celebrates Keeping Costs Low by Saving Energy

November 2006

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials, vendor partners and civic and energy leaders joined Bottom Dollar Food in Frederick, Md., on Nov. 14 to celebrate the chain's commitment to conserving energy in order to preserve the world's resources - and keep prices low for customers.

Said Jean Lupinacci, U.S. EPA chief of the ENERGYSTAR Commercial and Industrial Branch, during the event: "Bringing the same corporate commitment that has resulted in significant energy savings in Food Lion stores to Bottom Dollar Food is good business and will have tremendous benefit to the company, employees, customers and the community. But saving energy means much more. Because generating energy results in the release of greenhouse gases, eliminating unnecessary energy use helps the environment now and in generations to come."

Frederick G. Davis, Director of the Maryland Energy Administration, echoed Lupinacci's sentiment during his own speech during the event.

Bottom Dollar Food, a new discount grocery concept created by Food Lion LLC, has successfully continued the energy conservation strategies set by Food Lion. Since 2000, Food Lion has reduced energy consumption in its stores by more than 2.45 trillion BTUs (the energy equivalent of powering 71,784 American homes). Food Lion's aggressive energy reduction efforts have saved nearly $104.8 million dollars over six years.

Seven Bottom Dollar Food stores hold ENERGYSTAR designation from the U.S. EPA, certification that they are among the most energy efficient grocery stores in the industry. The U.S. EPA reports that approximately 1,100 grocery stores today have ENERGYSTAR designation. More than half these stores (approximately 600) are owned and operated by Food Lion LLC.

Bottom Dollar Food's seven ENERGYSTAR stores are located:

  • 410 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, Md.
  • 12675 Laurel Bowie Road, Laurel, Md.
  • 6920 Crestwood Blvd., Frederick, Md.
  • 46081 Briarcroft Plaza, Sterling, Va.
  • 14641-14643 Jefferson Drive, Woodbridge, Va.
  • 8750 Richmond Hwy., Alexandria, Va.
  • 1810 Hwy 64-70 S.E., Hickory, N.C.

Since 1998, Food Lion LLC and its banner divisions have worked in close partnership with the U.S. EPA to push Food Lion's energy-conservation efforts to increasingly higher levels. For its efforts adopting and applying energy management practices and technology throughout its store operations, Food Lion LLC received the EPA's ENERGYSTAR Partner of the Year awards in 2001 and 2002. In both years, Food Lion LLC was the only supermarket company to receive the honor. In 2003, 2004 and 2005, the EPA again recognized Food Lion LLC's energy efforts by awarding it the ENERGYSTAR Sustained Excellence Award.
